What is Powder Metallurgy?
Powder metallurgy is the name given to a process in which powder materials are mixed, pressed into a desired shape (densification), and then heated in a controlled environment (firing or sintering) to create a neck-like bond between the particles and the desired properties.
This process is primarily used to mass-produce small, complex parts to high precision and tight tolerances, often eliminating the need for secondary processes such as post-processing or polishing. There is little material waste in this manufacturing process, and materials with special chemical compositions can be used. It is also possible to produce parts with controlled degrees of porosity and density or permeability.
Valve seat component manufacturing steps:
1) Powder preparation and additive mixing:
Rarely does a pure powder have all the desired properties; therefore, a mixture of different powders with different compositions is usually used together with materials as lubricants. For the manufacture of this component, PM-M3 powder with the following chemical composition was used (Figure 1):
2) Compaction:
In this step, the powder is pressed into the desired shape and its density is increased. Usually, obtaining a high and uniform density is one of the desired characteristics, which is possible by pressing the part over its entire surface. Hydromechanical presses or a combination of both are used in this process. Typically, the pressure used in this process is between 10 and 30 tons per square inch. Although today, the capacity of the presses used has increased to 500 tons (Figure 2).
3) Sintering:
During the sintering process, the compacted part is placed in a high temperature and controlled atmosphere. High temperatures cause rapid oxidation, which prevents the formation of bonds between the metal grains. The atmospheres used in sintering steel parts are a certain proportion of hydrogen and nitrogen gases. Iron-containing PMs are often sintered with copper (Cu) to improve the physical and mechanical properties of the parts. During sintering-infiltration, molten copper penetrates the initially porous structure of the PM, filling the pores and creating a denser, less porous material (Figure 3). Figure 4 shows the microscopic microstructure of the part before and after copper infiltration.
4) Cryogenic Treatment:
Cryogenic treatment is a process in which the part is kept at a temperature of about -196oC for a certain period of time. This temperature is created using liquid nitrogen in a Cryogenic Chamber.
This process provides many improvements in the physical and mechanical properties of the part, which are briefly described below:
- 1) Reduction of the unwanted phase of retained austenite and its transformation into martensite
- 2) Reduction of microstructural defects of the part
- 3) Improvement of the homogeneity of the microscopic microstructure of the part
- 4) Reduction of residual stresses of the part
- 5) Increase in the hardness and strength of the part
- 6) Increase in the wear resistance of the part
- 7) Precipitation of small carbides that improve the mechanical properties of the part
Figure 5 shows the microscopic microstructure of the part after cryogenic treatment.
5) Vacuum oil impregnation and processing:
After the vacuum oil impregnation process, the parts are subjected to mechanical processing (Figures 6, 7, 8).
At the end of the production process, a final inspection of the parts is carried out (Figure 9).
Manufacturing steps of guide parts:
1) Casting:
The casting process is used to produce the guide from gray cast iron. The microscopic microstructure of gray cast iron is shown in Figure 11:
2) Processing:
After the casting process, the parts are subjected to mechanical processing (Figure 12).
At the end of the production process, a final inspection of the parts is carried out (Figure 13).
Mashhad Powder Metallurgy Company in Russia
Not long ago, the Iranian manufacturer Mashhad Powder Metallurgy Company (MPM) announced its entry into the Russian market. The magazine “Dvizhok” learned details about the company’s history and the technologies it uses in the production of parts.
Mashhad Powder Metallurgy Company (literally – “Mashhad Powder Metallurgy Company”) is one of the leading manufacturers of metal products in Iran. The company was founded in 1987; currently, its plant is the largest enterprise for the production of powder parts in Iran and the Middle East.
MPM’s main area of activity is the production of various components for the automotive industry, household appliances and stainless steel parts using metallurgical powder technology.
The essence of such technology is to obtain metal powders and manufacture various products from them (or from mixtures with non-metal powders) by compaction and sintering.
Powder metallurgy technology allows to obtain high-precision parts and is used either as a replacement for mechanical processing in mass production, or to achieve special properties and characteristics that cannot be obtained by other methods.
In the automotive sector, Mashhad Powder Metallurgy supplies its products to such companies as Peugeot, Renault, Iran Khodro, Sapco, Siapa Group, Mega Motor, Nirou Moharrkeh Ind. Group and others. MPM’s production line includes over 700 auto parts of two categories: engine and gearbox parts.
The company purchases metal powders from leading global suppliers of such raw materials, such as Hogans and Pometon. Production processes comply with IATF and ISO 9001 standards.
Mashhad Powder Metallurgy Company manufactures automotive parts in a wide range of configurations, from simple in size and shape to complex multi-layer components.
The company’s engineers can also offer customers consultations on the design of parts using CAD (Computer Aided Design), Abaqus FEA and 3D modeling technologies. The global slogan of Mashhad Powder Metallurgy Company (MPM): “Best quality – Largest quantity – Shortest delivery time”.

Quality Control Center
The quality control system at MPM consists of well-trained people whose activities are in line with those of other departments to monitor and maintain the quality characteristics of the parts and their requirements in order to offer the desired products to the customers.
The sampling and testing procedures for the products are carried out in three stages:
1– Incoming inspection: All incoming items are selected and tested according to the relevant standards and regulations, so they will be sent to the production lines if approved. The incoming inspection procedure is carried out in our laboratories equipped with testing equipment, precise inspection devices such as CMM, projection profile, various hardness testing equipment, roughness measuring devices and microscope. All the equipment mentioned above are calibrated in renowned laboratories and are regularly monitored by conscientious experts.
2– Inspection at the intermediate stage of production: At this stage, components are randomly selected and checked according to their visual changes and the process they undergo.
3- Finished product inspection: At this stage, samples of finished components are selected and checked for compliance with relevant standards in appearance, shape (packaging), dimensional control (according to certain parameters and standards) and practical control (laboratory testing and practical testing).
We are moving towards the future, striving to become the world’s leading auto parts manufacturer.
